If the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show was anything to go by, vertical planting in the form of ‘living walls’ is the latest craze in garden design. These eco-friendly, low maintenance walls are the perfect way to instantly green up a previously difficult area. The walls are constructed using planted up modular units which are hung on a pre-designed support framework and linked to the irrigation system.
Marshalls Living Street garden (above) designed by Ian Dexter was one of the highlights of last year’s Chelsea Flower Show, and showed how much is possible to achieve if the vertical as well as the horizontal is used. Their living wall was and built by Aldingbourne Nurseries using A.N. Systems
Although succulents, sempervivums and saxifrage are the obvious plants to use, designers are also experimenting with different perennials such as hostas, heucheras, epimediums, euphorbia’s and grasses.
Ian teamed up his green and purple tapestry planting with western red cedar fencing (above) which can be sourced from good fencing suppliers, try www.decksupply.co.uk
